Eco-Thrift Tips

Here are some tips from the experts in thrift - our Grannies! Some of these are a bit wacky, but who are we to argue with 70-something years of accumulated thrifty ways and wisdom?
  • Buy loose tea and a tea strainer and use a pot (it makes a much better cup, if you leave it to sit for three minutes). You use less tea and waste less packaging.
  • Save the water you wash your vegetables and salad in to give your plants a drink. The boiled egg water is great for this as well and has extra nutrients.
  •  If you have any odd ends of wine left (if you do) pour them into ice cube trays and freeze. You can pop them in gravy or a tomato sauce later!
  • If the lining of your jacket has gone you can replace it with a large silk shirt turned inside out, take off the collar and cuffs and slipstitch it into place.
  • To germinate seeds, tear open a damp, used tea bag and sprinkle the seeds in.
  • Wash out tin foil – it will stand easily to dry and can be used again
  • An old pair of tights makes a great bag to hang up onions and keep them fresh (nice!)
  • Have they put the price of toothpaste up again? Don’t worry you can clean them with salt*!?
  • To clean the carpet, spread tea leaves over it and brush out in the morning (Hmm . . .)

Ok, ok, maybe these are going a bit far so here are a few from us as well:

  • Have a lights out night in by candlelight!

  • Grow your own! If you want to start small try a few herbs in pots or a window box.

  • Start your own compost bin – and use the lovely brown stuff to grow your own veg!

  • Put a hippo bag in your toilet it could save you 1 litre in every flush.

  • Put foil panels behind your radiator to reflect more heat back into the room.

You can find hippo bags, foil radiator panels and energy saving light bulbs in our Green Starter Kits supplied by Green Tomato cars (value of rrp £9.99).  We have 500 to give away throughout the festival - come and see us on the Love London stall to find out how you can get one!  (A full list of events which the LL stall will attend will be published on the events page of this site closer to the time.)
