These are some of the fabulous tips that Londoners have come up with and submitted during our eco-thrift competition at the Love London stall:
Blackheath bike and kite
· Write on scrap paper
· Put paper in recycle bin
· When using a taxi, call the eco-friendly ones rather than old mini cab or black cabs
· Unplug your mobile when it has finished charging
· Don’t use dishwasher – let husband do the job
· Grow veg, eat veg, compost left over. No waste
· Giving things away to me
· Try and keep to a 3 minute shower. Turn off while soaping and shampooing
· Use old socks to do your polishing
· Use old coffee grounds to put around plants – eco way of keeping slugs and snails away
· Always re-use washing up water to water your plants
· Swap toys, books and clothes for children rather than buying new.
· Use bathwater to flush the loo, washing up water on garden
· Use rainwater to flush loos and wash cars
· When you run your hot water tap waiting for the hot water to come out – collect that water in bottles and water your plants with it
· Re-use your bread bags to wrap your packed lunch
· Never take your kettle to the tap – always put in what’s needed
· Don’t leave the water running whilst brushing your teeth
· Re-use newspaper to line rabbits cage
· Use a bucket to take a shower
· Share a bath with your family
· Recycle household objects – e.g. wallpaper borders, bottle tops to make craft ideas, cards, scrapbooks
· Use more solar energy
· Play board games instead of watching TV
· Shower instead of bath
· Always boil your bones (Editor's note: I'm guessing not your own bones . . .) to make stock for soup
· Take public transport, walk or cycle – gets you fit!
· If you drive, try to buy a car with lower emissions – you pay less tax too
· Kids – walk and talk to school – see walk and talk website
· Take the train if you are going on holiday
· How about a barge holiday?
· Use a water butt – recycle rainwater
· Turn TV off, not standby
· Wash hair once a week
· 30° wash only
· Make dinner from left-over’s, don’t throw any food away
· Use vinegar for de-scaling
· Recycle unwanted items on sites like Freecycle, efreeks etc. Or give to charity shops.
