Johnson is backing a London-based trial of an American scheme called Recycle Bank, which gives householders shopping vouchers or donations to charity to the value of how much they recycle.
The Mayor estimates a typical London household would make £14 a month under the scheme, one of a series of proposals contained in a draft municipal waste strategy.
Figures show the capital's recycling rates lags behind both the rest of the UK and other international cities.

Bin chutes in blocks of flats could be updated to take recycling and collection points may be put near doorways, the London mayor said.
Homeowners may be supplied with collapsible bags to bring their rubbish down to recycling points to make it easier to carry than the large plastic boxes often given out.
Mr Johnson will also introduce public awareness campaigns on recycling, littering, fly-tipping and chewing gum in a bid to improve the capital.
